Six members of the Bradford FFA senior chapter competed in the District 4 Forestry Evaluation Career Development Event at Gold Head Branch State Park in Keystone Heights on Oct. 6.
The competition challenged students to demonstrate their knowledge of forestry, forest management and natural-resource conservation.
To prepare, the Bradford forestry team of Emma Drake, Raekwon Givens, Koledon LeMire, William Lilly, Nicholas Ward and Dawson Westberry spent countless hours studying and building essential skills. They learned dendrology (also known as tree identification), tool identification, timber cruising, compass and pacing. They also studied forest pests, diseases and disorders, as well as forestry history and its environmental impact.
Although the team didn’t place in the top three, members gained valuable experience and strengthened their understanding of forestry. The competition allowed students to apply their knowledge while developing skills useful in future agricultural and natural resource careers.
Forestry plays an important role in environmental conservation. Healthy forests provide wildlife habitats, help protect soil and water resources, and support different types of ecosystems. By learning about tree health and proper forest management, students gain a better understanding of how to protect these natural resources.
