Earnest & Karen Boyles

Karen and Earnest Boyles

Nearly 60 years ago, Earnest Dean Boyles I and Karen Sue (Woods) Boyles began a life together that would take them across the country, through a long military career, five children, several careers, a family business, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and more memories than could ever fit on one page. Earnest was born on Oct. 23, 1944, in California and later lived in Kansas. Karen was born on Aug. 5, 1949, in Virginia. They married in 1965, and from there, life took off. Earnest proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Navy. Like so many military families, they learned to pack up, make a new home and go wherever the Navy sent them. When Earnest retired from the Navy in 1984, they made Florida their permanent home. Earnest always loved airplanes and wanted to know how they worked, so after the Navy, he found himself right back around them, beginning a second career in aviation. Karen worked as a civilian for the Naval Commissary until retiring in 1993. But retirement didn’t quite stick for either of them. Together they opened ESP Automotive (Earnie and Sons Performance), a family-run business they operated for 10 years. Eventually, after a lifetime of working, raising a family and building something of their own, they finally decided it was time to retire for good. Earnest and Karen had five children, Michael, Samantha, Tammie, Victoria, and Earnest Dean Boyles II. As the years passed, their family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom knew them best as Mom-Maw and Pop-Paw. Their story wasn’t made up of one big moment. It was almost 60 years of ordinary life lived together. Moving from place to place, raising children, going to work, building a business, watching their family grow, growing older and walking through all the good and hard that comes with a lifetime. And now, after so many years spent side by side, it feels right that we have the opportunity to honor them side by side.

Our family invites you to join us for a celebration of the lives of Earnest and Karen Boyles on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 12 p.m. at Gadara Baptist Church. A catered lunch will follow the service, and we would love for everyone to stay, eat, visit and share memories with us.
