A season of gratitude and giving

Dear Editor:

As the holiday season is now in full swing and life is busier than normal, I find that it is now that it is most important to take a moment and pause and reflect. This is the season when we are reminded of “Peace on Earth, good will to men” and that it is better to give than receive. For many, their hearts are full as they spend time with their loved ones and exchange gifts. Others may experience sadness as they remember those who are no longer with us. Still, some may be wishing for better days as they go through physical ailments or financial difficulties. Each of us has our stories that we are living.

I find it most comforting that no matter what our story is, this community can come together and support each other. Last Tuesday night, The Arc of Bradford County held its annual David Dodge Christmas Fundraiser at The Woman’s Club of Starke. Over 150 people from the community attended to help support this organization in its mission of supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. That night, $28,000 was raised during their cake auction from individuals and businesses in the community who have partnered with The Arc. One cake alone brought in $5,500!

In a world that seemingly is spiraling out of control, it is important to find the good. Sometimes we can be caught up in the moment, both good and bad moments, and forget that there are people who are right there with us in those moments. They are the ones who help carry us through both the good and the bad. They stand beside us and see us, celebrating our successes and sharing our grief when we experience loss.

I am extremely grateful for this community, for these people, who are continuously generous with their time, resources, talents and giving. Without generous donors like them, The Arc would not be able to continue its work. It is important to pause and reflect on this, and to be thankful. These are the moments where things are truly Better in Bradford.

To conclude, I want to say thank you to all who attended The Arc’s annual David Dodge Christmas Fundraiser and to all who contributed to help make it a success. Thank you to everyone who contributes throughout the year, helping us as we support some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community. I wish you all the best this in this season of giving!

Sincerely,

John Williams
