LAKE BUTLER — On the morning of May 27 members of the American Legion, Rotary Club and the Union County Community came together to honor those who have passed.
The event was solemn, beginning with a selection or patriotic music and a selection of historical quotes. At 10 a.m. the American flag was raised, then lowered to half mast, with the colors presented by the Union County High School ROTC Honor Guard. American Legion Post 153 Commander Brian Reagan welcomed the 118 attendees and gave a talk about the history of memorial day. The invocation was offered by Post 153 Chaplain Gene Gordon. The Boy Scout Troop 140 and Cub Scout Pack then presented the Parade of Services and Eli Rogers played the National Anthem.
The Honorable Mitchell Bishop, Post 153 Adjutant, read the names of the Union County veterans and others to be honored by the ceremony. The annual Laying of the Wreath at the Union County Veteran’s Memorial was done by Ted Barber and Shawn Newsome.
Reagan then held the POW-MIA service, followed by the guest speaker, LtCol. John Murdoch, USMC (ret), District 2 Vice-Commandant, Marine Corps League, Department of Florida. The ceremony concluded with final comments by Reagan and the playing of “Taps.” Refreshments after the event were provided by the Lake Butler Community Page (Facebook).
