Torin Brazell and Damarion Hankerson combined to score nine points during a 13-0 run to close out the third quarter and leave the Bradford High School boys basketball trailing by eight, but the Tornadoes went on to lose 60-44 to visiting P.K. Yonge on Jan. 5.
A three-pointer by Hankerson off a Race Black assist put Bradford (4-6) up 5-3 early in the first quarter, but P.K. Yonge outscored the Tornadoes 13-3 to go into the second quarter leading by seven.
The Blue Wave made three three-pointers in the first quarter and added two more in the early stages of the second quarter to go up 22-12. Bradford scored six of the next eight points, with Brazell scoring off a Hankerson assist, Journie Sampson scoring off an offensive rebound and Hankerson getting a layup off a Mattox Burgin inbounds pass.
P.K. Yonge closed out the half with a 10-2 run to take a 33-20 lead into the locker room.
It was a 19-point game when the Tornadoes went on their run to end the third quarter. It began with a Hankerson three-pointer, followed by a rebound putback by Sampson. Hankerson scored off a Burgin assist, while Brazell scored two straight baskets — one off an offensive rebound and the other off a Hankerson assist. Keith Taylor then scored to send Bradford into the fourth quarter trailing 48-40.
Bradford went 1 of 12 from the field in the final quarter.
Brazell and Hankerson led the team with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Taylor added six points, while the Tornadoes also got five from Burgin, four from Sampson, two from Black and one from Trejan Tyson.
Bradford got solid rebounding efforts from Brazell and Sampson, especially in the second half when each grabbed nine.
