Hannah McFarland hit two two-run doubles and finished with four RBI for the fourth-seed Bradford High School softball team, which defeated fifth-seed Hamilton County 11-1 in five innings in the quarterfinals of the District 5-1A tournament on May 2.
The Tornadoes (15-6) play top-seed Union County in a semifinal today (May 3) at 4 p.m. at Hilliard High School, which is hosting the entire tournament.
McFarland’s doubles occurred in consecutive innings, helping Bradford score four in the second and three in the third.
Bradford loaded the bases in the second when Amber Wynn and Kirsten Hodges hit back-to-back singles after Allie Funderburk reached on an error. Rylie Blankenship drove in a run on a ground out before McFarland pushed two across with her first double. Takeirra Bakken later drove in a run on a single.
The bases were loaded again in the third inning when Blankenship drove in a run on a single. McFarland, who went 3 for 3, then hit her second two-run double to put the Tornadoes ahead 7-0.
Wynn drove in a run in the fourth inning, while Masey Padgett hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run fifth inning.
Wynn, who was 4 for 4 with two RBI, ended the game on a run-scoring double that put the 10-run rule into effect.
Padgett finished with the two RBI off her homer, while Bakken went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Starting pitcher Cassidy Spratlin gave up one run on one hit and two walks through 4.2 innings. Blankenship finished it out, facing three batters and giving up two hits and no walks.
