BROOKER – School supplies and valuable information were available in abundance at the Brooker Community School’s backpack giveaway. Principal Felecia Moss was on site, along with teachers and board members, to greet the incoming and prospective students who came to gather critical supplies to get their school year off to a successful start.

Volunteers were inside the cafeteria with the loaded backpacks while local organizations set up tables outside with information and additional goodies. Florida Health offered information on healthy lifestyle choices and safety precautions, along with a jump rope to encourage exercise. IFAS was there with an opportunity for students to get involved with 4-H clubs. With the school’s emphasis on agriculture, the 4-H activities are a perfect fit.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is a free program that partners with parents of children ages two through five to help prepare parents and children for school success. Trained instructors will make weekly home visits for 30 weeks, complete with instructional materials and activities. The program works with parents to give them the skills to be instructors in preparing their child for school in the years ahead. Activities are geared to age and ability of each child and family. Their table was filled with free books and ideas for preschoolers.

The new charter school is now in session.
