GREEN COVE SPRINGS— The organizer of an upcoming racing event at Keystone Beach Park said coverage of the event will wind up on a sports cable channel.

Alan Verlander of Airstream Ventures told the Clay County Tourist Development Council on Wednesday, Jan. 26 that the April motorized surfboard and motorized skateboard competitions will be videotaped and broadcasted as a half-hour program on a CBS sports network.

Keystone Heights City Manager Lynn Rutkowski told the city council earlier that the motorized surfboarding event will draw competitors from around the world.

It’s basically a jet ski surfboard,” Verlander explained about the water-based races. “They’re on a surfboard with a jet propeller that is the same propeller as a jet ski.  And then the skateboard competition, it’s an electric skateboard and your controller’s in your hand and you go through all these loops and all that kind of stuff.”

During the same meeting, Verlander said demand for water venues is strong with many water-based events, particularly fishing tournaments looking for venues.

CBS sports plans to televise a motorized surfboard competition at Keystone Beach in April, according to the event’s organizer.
