KEYSTONE HEIGHTS— Over 60 people attended the Aug. 25 meeting of the Clay Chamber’s Lake Region Prosperity Council at the Keystone Beach Pavilion.
Sheriff Michelle Cook, County Commissioner Betsy Condon and newly elected School Board Member Michele Hanson briefly addressed the gathering.
Community Affairs Lt. Michael Layne of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office talked to the group about civilian responses to an active shooter at the workplace.
Layne used the acronym ADD to describe how to respond.
Avoid: Flee the scene if possible. Be aware of your surroundings. Do not hesitate. Go to the closest, safe exit.
Deny: If fleeing the scene is not possible, deny the shooter access to your location by locking doors, barricading the entrance or erecting obstacles. Turn off the lights in your location, silence your phone, stay out of sight and devise a backup plan.
Defend: When someone is trying to kill you, you have the legal right to defend yourself. Do not fight fair. Use any objects available like a fire extinguisher, scissors or hot coffee, Be aggressive. Attack weak spots like the eyes, throat and groin. Do not quit until the attacker is disarmed.
