Workers began tearing down the former Checkers Drive-in at the corner of U.S. 301 and Lafayette Street in Starke.
D & R Restaurants Inc. acquired the parcel in 1994 and constructed the 1,084-square-foot drive-through that same year.
In August of 2012 D&R sold the building on less than an acre to NAKD LLC of Jacksonville,
The building underwent a brief second life as a drive-thru for Asian food.
In August 2019, a Starke code enforcement officer found the property in violation of city codes for discarded debris, excessive overgrowth of vegetation and disrepair of the structure.
Inspections the following October and November determined that minor corrections had been made to the property, but overall conditions remained the same. In December 2019 the city filed a lien on the property and began imposing a $100-a-day fine.
Work began clearing the property and removing the roof before the walls came down.
