Jay Cohen hit two solo home runs, with the second coming as part of a two-run seventh inning as the Union County High School baseball team defeated host Keystone Heights 5-3 on March 29.
Keystone tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Jones scored on a wild pitch. Jones reached on a single and moved to second on a subsequent error. He then advanced to third on Connor Guy’s ground out.
The Tigers were down to their last out in the top of the seventh when Cohen sent a ball over the fence in right field. Ayden Elixson and Blake Agner reached on a single and a walk, respectively, before Elixson scored on Trevor Hotlzendorf’s line drive into right field.
Keystone went three up and three down in the bottom of the inning against pitcher Luke Johns, who struck out the first two he faced.
It was the home team that got on the board first, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Guy and Dalton Hollingsworth in the first. Guy’s hit scored Jones, who reached on a single, while Hollingsworth’s hit scored Guy.
Union cut into the Indians’ lead when Cohen hit a two-out home run in the third to make the score 2-1.
The Tigers took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Agner, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a single by Bryson Huggins. Huggins later scored on a two-out single hit by Tre’von Lee. That made the score 3-2 in favor of Union before Jones scored a run for the Indians in the sixth.
Cohen finished 3 for 3, while Holtzendorf and Lee went 2 for 3 and 2 for 4, respectively.
Johns, who pitched two innings of relief, gave up one run on one hit and no walks, striking out three.
Union starting pitcher Eli Rimes gave up four hits and no walks, striking out four.
Guy and Jones each went 2 for 3 for Keystone.
