Community Church held its 17th annual back-to-school supplies event for Lake Region students at its Southeast Palmetto Avenue campus on July 17 and 18.
Students could pick up free shoes, socks, underwear, personal hygiene products, and several changes of clothes. Event organizer Barbara Sullivan said that this year, a jewelry table was added.
Jenn Cumbus said the number of children participating in the event was slightly down compared to previous years, which she credits to improving economic situations with families.
The number of volunteers was sharply up this year, particularly volunteers from the church.
Cumbus said Community Church is growing, and that growth is reflected in the number of volunteers for the back-to-school event.
The back-to-school giveaway is an outgrowth of the church’s rummage sale, which has been going strong since the 1920s.
