During the Nov. 15 Bradford County Commission meeting, Diane Andrews and Carolyn Spooner were appointed chair and vice chair of the board.
This was a first for both women, but possibly for the board and Bradford County as well. Andrews may be the first woman to hold the leadership position, and Spooner may be the first woman appointed vice chair. Spooner is surely the first African American woman to hold the role.
Both commissioners are among the few women who have served on the board. When former commissioner Lila Sellars was elected in 2008, she was only the third woman on the board — with the earlier women serving decades before that.
Each year the board reorganizes and appoints officers to serve yearlong terms. The chairperson conducts meetings, signs documents and represents the county in an official capacity. The vice chair covers these roles in the absence of the chair.
