Lake Butler Middle School’s volleyball team, which has won four straight Suwannee Middle School Athletic Conference championships, has started the 2023 conference slate 4-0 after wins over Fort White and Interlachen.
The Tigers hosted Fort White in a Sept. 7 doubleheader, sweeping both matches. Union won the first match by scores of 25-11 and 25-9 and the second match by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.
Lake Butler traveled to Interlachen on Sept. 11. The Tigers beat the Rams 25-8 in the first set of the first match, but the host team came back to win the second set 26-24. Lake Butler won the tiebreaker set 15-5 for the 2-1 match win.
The second match was all Tigers as they won both sets by scores of 25-3 and 25-10.
Head Coach Robbie Best’s record at LBMS improved to 185-29. Best, who is in his eighth season, has guided the Tigers to five SMAC championships.
Best’s assistant coach is Angela Griffis.
Player Morgan Smith was LBMS’ inaugural Athlete of the Month in August. Ink and Thread Graphics sponsors the monthly award. Recipients will receive a free Tigers T-shirt.
Lake Butler returns to the court on Thursday, Sept. 14, traveling to play Lake City at 5 p.m. The Tigers then travel to Starke on Monday, Sept. 18, to play SMAC opponent Bradford at 5 p.m.
