Demand for cell phone antennas strong in Lake Region

GREEN COVE SPRINGS— Assistant County Manager Troy Nagle told Clay commissioners during a recent meeting that mobile phone companies are trying to increase capacity in the Keystone Heights-area, anticipating growth in the Lake Region.

He made the comments after Commissioner Betsy Condon asked him if the county could increase revenues by leasing space on its properties to mobile phone antenna operators.

Nagle said the county often receives requests from cell tower builders to lease space on county property.

Nagle added that companies back away from their requests when informed of the county’s bid processes, because they do not want to divulge to competitors what their plans are.

“There are three areas that they are looking for:” Nagle told commissioners, “how to get to that backside of Oakleaf- in Foxmeadow-, how to get to that (State Road) 16 and (State Road) 21 intersection, because they know what’s coming out there, and how to get to Keystone. That’s the three areas we get asked about the most.”
