Disappointed by sheriff’s office response

Dear Editor:

A recent event took place in Keystone Heights that has shocked the community. On Saturday night, into Sunday morning, the ninth through the 10th of May, there was a sex party in a B&B on Pointview Road near the elementary school. The words “sex party” came from the owner of the property who, shortly before the event, informed a neighbor that it was going to take place. There were to be over 400 people. Tickets were sold, $40 for singles and $70 for couples. It lasted into the night with cars everywhere, many with out-of-town license plates,  blocking driveways and parked on neighbors lawns and people wandering around on private property well into the morning hours of Sunday.

One of the neighbors gave a report at the city council’s May 11 meeting. He said he called the sheriff’s office twice. One of the attendees of the party threatened his life when he objected to the person blocking the gate to his house. The mayor said that she was out of town at the time but received some calls about what was going on, and she told them to call the sheriff’s office.

The person giving the report said that when the sheriff deputies answered his call, they just shrugged their shoulders so to speak, indicating there was nothing they could do. They didn’t enter the house where the party was going on to speak to whoever was in charge, nor did they do anything about the trespassing.

The mayor and council members and the city’s attorney are going to look into the issues that concern the city, talk to the owner of the property and the B&B involved in allowing such an event to take place. We have an excellent mayor and city council, and I have confidence that they will take the necessary action.

As I listened to the report, what most disturbed me was the lack of response from Clay County’s law enforcement. Keystone Heights depends on the deputies assigned to our city to maintain law and order. The deputies on duty failed to do so. We need some answers from our county sheriff’s department.

Sincerely,

Rosemary Hyslop
