To protect Florida homes from the devastating effects of natural disasters, the Florida Division of Emergency Management has launched the Elevate Florida program — a statewide initiative designed to reduce damage from hurricanes, floods, and other environmental hazards.
The program could transform the way Florida residents safeguard their properties and prepare for future storm seasons.
The Elevate Florida program targets homeowners who are at risk of experiencing significant damage in the event of a storm. Its mission is straightforward: to reduce damage by strengthening homes and making them more resilient to natural disasters. The program focuses on four types of projects: structure elevation, wind mitigation, mitigation reconstruction and acquisition/demolition, with a goal of enhancing the long-term safety and sustainability of communities.
While the program is open to all Florida homeowners, eligibility requires that participants be U.S. citizens over the age of 18, legal property owners of residential structures, and able to contribute up to 25% of the project’s cost. Interestingly, even properties that have not previously experienced flooding or damage can qualify, though applications may be prioritized for those with a history of loss. Even multifamily residences like townhomes and apartments may be eligible, as well as manufactured homes.
For homeowners seeking assistance, the application process is designed to be simple and efficient. By registering through the Elevate Florida Portal, applicants can complete an application in about 20 minutes, provided they have the necessary documentation in hand, such as photos of the property, insurance details, and elevation certificates, if applicable.
Once submitted, the program’s review process takes place over five stages, from initial application submission to the final closeout of the project, with an estimated timeline ranging from a few months to up to two years depending on the complexity of the project.
One of the key features of the Elevate Florida program is its cost-sharing structure. Federal grants will cover at least 75% of the total project cost, leaving property owners responsible for up to 25%. While the program does not help cover this cost-share, homeowners may seek financial relief through loans from the Small Business Administration.
Aside from offering significant cost savings — sometimes reducing flood damage protection costs by up to 100% — the program also helps homeowners lower their flood insurance premiums and increase their property values over time.
Elevate Florida says its impact goes beyond individual homes. By improving the resilience of properties, the program claims it could strengthen entire communities, helping to reduce the long-term effects of natural disasters on the state’s
economy and environment.
Elevate Florida offers additional assistance that includes contractor services, temporary housing during construction, and accommodations for residents with disabilities. The program’s proactive approach aims to create a safer, more sustainable Florida for future generations.
