Fly Keystone owner Frank Fields withdrew his proposal for a Crystal Lake seaplane base Aug. 4, minutes after dozens of residents packed the Keystone Heights Airport Authority boardroom.
“The amount of people that showed up today convinced me,” said Fields, who holds Seat 1 on the authority and had recused himself from the matter. “Fly Keystone is withdrawing an application to do the seaplane base.”
Fields, a Melrose attorney and longtime pilot, said his flight school saw demand for seaplane training and cited Jack Brown’s Seaplane Base in Winter Haven as a model.
“There are ways that this could be done safely,” he said. “Seaplanes are very enjoyable, and they’re a very good hobby. That was why we thought it might work.”
