STARKE— A 34-year-old Starke woman was sentenced to community control and probation after pleading to forging a check, stealing her mother’s car and credit card and selling a stolen gun.
Angela Maria Dawn Maddix pleaded no contest to the July 29, 2022, offense of forgery of a bank check, the Aug. 7, 2022 offenses of vehicle theft and credit card theft and the July 22, 2022, offense of dealing in stolen property. Judge James M. Colaw also sentenced her to 36 days in jail with credit for 36 says already served.
According to court papers, a family member of the defendant’s told Starke police that Maddix had volunteered to take his light bill to the City of Starke because the family member had just gotten out of the hospital.
“Angela took an additional check out of (the victim’s) purse and took it to Community State Bank and cashed it,” reporting officer Courtney Personette wrote. “(The victim) did not give Angela permission to take a check and cash it… (The victim) only gave permission for Angela to take a check to the City of Starke town hall to pay the light bill.”
An employee of the bank told police the defendant made three attempts to cash the check at the bank’s drive-through.
“(The witness) stated that the first check was made out for the City of Starke, and they did not accept it,” wrote the officer. “Angela then crossed out the City of Starke and wrote in her own name, and they did not accept that check either. Angela then came through the drive-through for the third time and cashed (the victim’s) check for two hundred and sixty dollars.”
In a separate report, police wrote that after a Starke man reported three guns stolen from his home in August, they received information from Bradford deputies that a Keystone Heights man became suspicious after purchasing a firearm from Maddix.
The buyer told police he purchased the 0.22-caliber from Maddix for $100. A few days later, Maddix contacted the buyer, saying the person who gave her the gun was being investigated for theft, and Maddix was uncertain if the weapon had been stolen. The buyer called law enforcement, which traced the gun to the August theft.
On Aug. 7, the defendant’s mother reported to police that the defendant had stolen her bank card and 2012 Hyundai Accent.
Four hours after the victim initially called police, she called back again, saying Maddix was back at her house. Police found the defendant in a detached structure on the victim’s property.
