Girlfriend sneaks fentanyl to inmate

The girlfriend of a Union Correctional Work Camp inmate was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence and three years’ probation, while her boyfriend earned an additional four years in state custody after the couple pleaded to smuggling contraband into a correctional facility.

Crystal Monique Garcia, 29, of Lake Butler, and the inmate Troy Aaron, 26, pleaded to trafficking in phenethylamines. Garcia also pleaded to introducing contraband into a correctional facility, and Aaron pleaded to possession of a controlled substance by an inmate.

According to court papers, the couple was seated at a table during visitation when a correctional officer saw the inmate reach to the ground and put something in his boot. The white, powdery substance was wrapped in clear cellophane and black duct tape. The 29 grams tested positive for Fentanyl.

State inspectors wrote that Garcia admitted to making deliveries to Aaron three times over several months but did not know what the deliveries contained. Aaron refused to answer investigators’ questions.
