STARKE—A Miami man was sentenced to 4-and-a-half years after pleading to biting a correctional officer’s thumb while the immate knew he was HIV-positive.

Thirty-seven-year-old Travis T. Scott was serving a 25-year sentence at Florida State Prison for a 2011, armed burglary in Miami when he was accused of attacking the officer.

According to Department of Corrections inspectors, on February 23, 2023, two officers were escorting the inmate from a cell to a wing within the facility when Scott refused to walk further. The two officers picked the inmate up and carried him to the destination, where the inmate stuck his leg outside the cell, preventing the officers from closing the door.

While the sergeant and correctional officer tried to force Scott back into the cell, the inmate bit the sergeant’s left thumb. After the victim “administered several strikes to inmate Scott’s facial area,” the defendant released the thumb.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Scott has battered or attempted to batter correctional officers on five previous occasions. Department of Corrections records indicate the inmate has been involved with 14 use-of-force incidents.
