Indians open volleyball season with two sweeps

Riley Barry and Sarah Siebert each had six kills as the Keystone Heights High School volleyball team defeated visiting Interlachen 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-6) for its second straight sweep to open the season.

The Indians (2-0) travel to play Newberry on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., following a junior varsity match at 6 p.m. The Indians will host Bolles on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., following a 6 p.m. JV match. Keystone then hosts Clay on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m., with the JV teams starting action at 5:30 p.m.

One kill each by Barry and Eatmon helped Keystone build a 5-1 first-set lead against Interlachen. A Siebert service ace later made it 17-7, while a 5-0 run with Kori Jennings serving put the Indians up 23-8. Kiersten Shaw had a kill during that span and later recorded another kill to force side-out and give the serve to Keystone’s Taylor Marquart. The winning point came on an Interlachen attack error.

The Indians scored 11 straight points with Jules Padgett serving to build a 20-3 lead in the second set. Padgett recorded three aces, while Siebert and Kamryn Eatmon each had a kill during that span. A Siebert block forced a side-out and gave the serve to Eatmon for the winning point, which came on an attack error.

Keystone scored the first five points of the third set with Jennings serving. A tip and two service aces by Abbie Roach scored three points during a four-point span that saw the Indians increase their lead to 15-4. The Indians scored three straight points with Padgett serving to go up 19-5. Padgett finished with 16 points and six aces.

The Indians closed the match out with five straight points with Sammi Potter serving. Barry had two consecutive kills, while Potter recorded her third ace for the match winner.

Jennings finished with 12 assists and four aces, while Barry and Siebert each had three blocks.  Potter and Padgett had four and three digs, respectively.

The Indians opened the season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) win over visiting West Nassau on Aug. 23. Jennings had 23 assists and five aces, while Padgett had 15 digs and four aces. Siebert had seven kills, while Eatmon and Shaw each had six. Barry added five kills and four aces.
