STARKE—The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a Friday suicide attempt that resulted in the death of a Bradford County Jail inmate on Sunday.
In a social media post, the sheriff’s office said that the inmate, later identified as Alaina Rae Lilly, 32, of Green Cove Springs, was found unresponsive in her cell and was transported to UF Health Shands after corrections deputies found her unresponsive.
“At noon on Sunday, she was taken off life support and died a short time later,” the office said.
Col. Brad Smith said that Lilly, who was in an isolated cell, had requested to speak to a detention deputy, and the officer responded that she was busy and would get with Lilly shortly.
Two minutes later, deputies found the inmate in her cell with a bedsheet wrapped around her neck.
Lilly had been in jail since Dec. 1 when she was arrested on a warrant.
According to a sworn complaint, on Aug. 1, a sheriff’s office confidential source purchased methamphetamine from a house on West Pratt Street. The home was within 1,000 feet of Smyrna Baptist Church. Lilly was allegedly involved in the drug deal.
