Keystone boys basketball team falls to Hornets

After winning two in a row, the Keystone Heights High School boys basketball team has gone 1-4, with the latest result being a 68-47 loss at Hawthorne on Dec. 15.

Greg Pelham and Darrion Grady scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss to the Hornets, who advanced to the Class 1A Final Four last year. The Indians also got seven points from Connor Guy, six from Michael Petty, five from Zane Leger, four from Garrison Teague and two each from Michael Bruzzese and Cartez Daniels.

Keystone (3-6) opened the season with two straight losses. In an 82-30 road loss to the reigning Class 1A state champion Williston Red Devils on Nov. 27, the Class 4A Indians got six points each from Leger and Teague. Guy and Daniels added five and four, respectively, while Grady and Petty each had two. Pelham had one point.

Andru Siemer led the team with 14 points in a 69-32 loss to visiting Fort White on Nov. 29. Pelham and Bryce Hollingsworth scored eight and seven points, respectively, while Bruzzese, Daniels and Petty each added one.

The Indians played their third straight 1A team, defeating visiting Union County 66-54 on Dec. 1. Keystone outscored the Tigers 24-11 in the fourth quarter.

Pelham poured in 19 points, while Hollingsworth and Teague had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Keystone also got seven points from Petty, five from Siemer, four from Guy and two each from Grady and Bryant Kubisak.

The Indians won their second straight game, defeating South Eastern Christian Conference school Old Plank 77-40 on Dec. 4 in Jacksonville. Seimer and Teague led the team with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Leger had nine points. Keystone also got eight points from Guy, seven from Daniels, six each from Bruzzese and Petty, five from Hollingsworth, four from Grady and two each from Kubisak and Pelham.

Keystone traveled to Fort White on Dec. 5, losing 74-54. Siemer and Bruzzese scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, while Leger added nine. Pelham had eight points, with Teague and Hollingsworth chipping in four and three, respectively. Daniels added two points.

Grady led the team with 13 points in a 68-47 District 5 loss to visiting Palatka on Dec. 8. Bruzzese and Siemer scored eight and seven points, respectively, while Leger and Petty each had six. The Indians also got four points from Teague and three from Kubisak.

On Dec. 12, the Indians trailed visiting Clay by just four points at halftime before being outscored 25-11 in the third quarter of what proved to be a 75-60 loss to the Class 5A Blue Devils.

Teague and Petty had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Guy scored seven points, followed by Bruzzese, Grady and Leger with six each and Kubisak and Pelham with five each.

Keystone got 16 points each from Grady and Leger in a 75-64 win over visiting Interlachen on Dec. 14 to break the three-game losing streak.

Pelham scored 15 points in the win over the Class 3A Rams, while Teague had 10 points. The Indians also got seven points from Bruzzese, four from Kubisak, two each from Daniels, Guy and Dan Natirboff and one from Daniel Lozano.

The Indians travel to play Union County on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Keystone then plays in a Dec. 27-29 tournament at Bradford High School (see related story).
