Keystone girls defeat Lake Butler 20-6 in SMAC tourney

Third seed Keystone Heights defeated sixth seed Lake Butler 20-6 in the quarterfinals of the Suwannee Middle Athletic Conference girls basketball tournament on Jan. 22 in Keystone.

Keystone will play second seed Williston in a semifinal game on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Keystone Heights High School gym.

The Indians scored six points in the opening quarter. Raven Bastin had a steal that eventually led to her jump shot for the first points of the game. Briythen Cooper added the second basket, followed by Taylor Hall scoring after a steal by Alexandera Papaiouannou.

Maria Papaiouannou had the only basket in the second quarter as Keystone went into halftime leading 8-0.

Keystone had a couple of steals to start the third quarter, with Alexandera Papaiouannou scoring off one by Cooper to make it a 10-0 game. The Indians got baskets from Bastin and Cooper to go up 14-0 before Lake Butler’s Alayah Jefferson finally put her team on the board.

Cooper scored off her own steal, while Alexandera Papaiouannou had a basket off an offensive rebound to send the Indians into the fourth quarter leading 18-2.

The Tigers scored the first four points of the final quarter, getting two free throws from Latoya Hampton and a basket by Ivy Wilson, which was set up by Graci Jenkins’ steal.

Maria Papaiouannou had the last score of the game.

Cooper led Keystone with six points, while Bastin, Alexandera Papaiouannou and Maria Papaiouannou each had four. Hall added two points.
