Kiersten Shaw placed second in the high jump and was one of three from Keystone Heights High School to qualify for the Region 1-2A meet after their performances at the April 19 District 3 meet, which was held at St. Augustine’s Tocoi Creek High School.
The top four finishers in each event earned the right to advance. The Region 1 meet will be held Wednesday, May 3, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Shaw cleared 4-9.75 in the high jump to place behind Santa Fe’s Destiny McBroom, who cleared 5-3.75.
After successful first attempts at 4-2, 4-4 and 4-6, Shaw had two unsuccessful jumps at 4-7.75 before clearing the bar on her third attempt to keep advancing. She was one of four who attempted 4-9.75, which only she and McBroom were successful in clearing.
The Indians’ Marissa Dowell and boys team member Shepherd Rozier each earned a fourth-place finish to advance to regionals. Dowell’s first attempt in the long jump was 14-11.25, which proved to be her best and good enough to give her fourth place ahead of Tocoi Creek’s Alanah Curtis. Rozier qualified for regionals in the 400m, running a time of 51.92, which put him across the finish line ahead of Bradford’s Jaleel Easley, who had a time of 52.02.
Tyler Griffin fell one spot shy of a Region 1 berth, running a fifth-place time of 2:04 in the 800m. That put him behind Bolles’ Cormac Kimberly, who had a time of 2:02.
The girls team, which placed seventh in the team standings, also earned points in two relays. The 4x400m team of Christine Djavaheri, Brook Graudons, Candace Jackson and Ashly McCarthy ran a sixth-place time of 5:01, while the 4x100m team of Dowell, Graudons, Shaw and Tinleigh Gubics ran a seventh-place time of 57.85.
Shaw added to the team’s score with a seventh-place distance of 14-8.75 in the long jump.
