KH drops to 2-7 with loss at Tocoi Creek

Tocoi Creek quarterback Ryan Killmer ran for two touchdowns, and Wendell Dean tacked on two more scores boosting the Toros to a 35-0 win over Keystone Heights.

The visiting Indians started well, with Darrion Grady intercepting a Toros pass midway through the first quarter and Keystone driving from their own 11-yard line to the Tocoi Creek 32 to start the second period.

However, an Indian fumble killed the drive, and with four minutes remaining in the half, Tocoi Creek’s Davian Garcia broke a 41-yard run to the Indian eight. Killmer then ran in for the game’s first score from one yard out, giving the Toros a 7-0 lead, with Ronaldo Medina adding the extra point.

With under a minute remaining in the half, Dean broke an 83-yard scoring rush, opening up a 14-point lead for the Toros at the half with Medina’s PAT.

The Indians tried an onside kick to start the second half, but Tocoi Creek recovered the ball on the Toros 47. Killmer then led the Toros on a 53-yard scoring drive, capped with a Ziovanni Axaopoulos 1-yard-run. Medina’s extra point gave the Toros a 21-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

One minute later, Tocoi Creek struck again after recovering a Keystone fumble on the Indian 10, and Killmer followed up with his second rushing touchdown from 10-yards out. Medina’s PAT gave the Toros a 28-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter.

On Keystone’s ensuing possession, Tocoi Creek’s Camron Bolden intercepted a Keystone pass, setting up the Toro’s final TD with six minutes left in the game. Dean hit paydirt with a 3-yard plunge, giving the home team a 35-0 lead after Medina’s PAT and initiating a running clock under Florida high school football rules.

Keystone threatened one last time, with the defense stiffening during a Toros 11-play,  45-yard drive and forcing them into a four-and-out on the Keystone 24.

Two plays later, Bryar Schenck broke a 52-yard run to the Tocoi 22, and runs by Schenck and Vernell Jackson advanced the ball to the five.

However, after a Toros sack pushed Keystone back to the 12, the Indians attempted a field goal with 25 seconds left in the game.

The kick sailed wide right, and the Toros’ shutout was preserved.
