Two students from Keystone Heights Elementary School excelled in the local Spelling Bee championships.

Fifth grader Bristol Wasdin secured first place, while sixth grader Ashlynn Frysinger took second. This was their first time competing.

The competition took place on Thursday, January 15.

The students were given two weeks to memorize 450 words and had only one chance to spell the words correctly under pressure.

“I just liked that it was an experience, and I think it can really help in the future. It was fun learning words and spelling,” said Wasdin.

“It was a new experience, something I never done before, and it brings new opportunities and using new, higher, advanced words and conversations for the future,” said Frysinger.

When they aren’t in school, Wasdin enjoys running in her free time, while Frysinger enjoys reading. Both love to play soccer.

“I think it just opens up new opportunities. If you want to be a businesswoman or something like that, you want to know how to talk and have conversations and do marketing, stuff like that,” said the runner-up.

“Even if you don’t think you can do it, you’ll never know that until you try, and no matter how hard it is, you always need to try and just constantly keep practicing because practice makes perfect,” said the fifth-grade student.
