Connor Guy had two extra-base hits, while Jeremy Miller hit a two-run homer to help the Keystone Heights High School baseball team defeat visiting Middleburg 7-3 on April 25.
The Indians (12-11) scored four runs in the third inning. Ty Glenn drew a walk, while Chase Packham hit a single. Both scored on a Guy triple. Guy later scored on a wild pitch, while Miller, who walked, scored on an error.
Those proved to be all the runs Keystone would need with the way Ben Goforth was pitching. He gave up three unearned runs (two on two errors in the fifth inning) on three hits in 6.2 innings. He had seven strikeouts.
Still, Keystone gave their pitcher a bigger cushion to work with, tacking on another three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Guy hit a leadoff double before Miller drove a pitch over the fence in left. Ashton Roach drove in his team’s final run on a single, making the score 7-2.
Guy finished 2 for 3, while Ryan Jones went 2 for 4 with a double.
It was the third straight win for the Indians, who were coming off wins over Orange Park and Palatka.
On April 19, Keystone scored five runs in the second and another four in the sixth to defeat host Orange Park 9-3.
Alex Addington hit an RBI double in the second, which also included Jones, Roach and Dalton Hollingsworth each driving in a run as well. An error also allowed a run to score.
Addington, Guy, Miller and Noah Branch each drove in a run in the sixth, with Miller’s RBI coming on a double.
Hollingsworth and Addington went 2 for 2 and 2 for 4, respectively.
Gage Smith started on the mound, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk through two innings. He had three strikeouts.
Glenn pitched the majority of the game, giving up no hits and striking out five in four innings.
Jesse Stanley threw the final inning, giving up a run on one hit.
Keystone hosted Palatka on April 22, with Cole Cumbus striking out 11 batters in the Indians’ 4-2 win.
Palatka led 2-0 before Keystone scored three runs in the fourth. Miller singled and advanced on an Addington sacrifice bunt before scoring on a Walker West double. After a Roach single, West scored on a passed ball. Hollingsworth then hit a single to score Roach.
Branch and Roach each went 2 for 3, with Branch hitting a double and driving in one run.
Cumbus pitched a complete game, giving up five hits.
The Indians host Tocoi Creek on Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. and will conclude the regular season with a home game against Clay on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m.
