KHHS lifters King, Wright earn 3 medals at Clay County Championships

Keystone Heights High School’s girls weightlifting team competed at the Clay County Championships on Jan. 11, with Ariel King and Kaylee Wright combining to win three medals.

Wright was the runner-up in the 169-pound class in both the traditional (bench press, clean and jerk) and snatch events, while King placed third in the 129 class in the traditional event.

Heidi Knapp (119 class) and Chloe Still (139) earned fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the traditional event, while Lily Mitchell (183) earned a seventh-place finish. Earning eighth-place finishes were Madison Sapp (110), Kat Brossette (139) and Kenly Chitty (154). Abbigail Anthony-Rozier was 10th in the 119 class.

In the snatch, Chitty placed eighth, while the following earned 10th-place finishes: Knapp, Ashlyn Brown (154) and Paige Harrington (183).

Oakleaf won the team championship in the traditional event, while Clay won the snatch championship.

Keystone was the only Class 1A school in the event, which included a Clay High team that was last year’s Class 2A state champion in both the traditional and snatch events, a Ridgeview team that was third at last year’s 2A state finals in the snatch and an Oakleaf team that was sixth in the traditional event at last year’s 3A state finals.

The Indians entered the meet off a loss at Palatka on Jan. 5. Sapp, King, Still and Wright all won their weight classes in the traditional event, while Wright and Dakota Herring (unlimited) took wins in the snatch event.

Knapp was her class runner-up in the traditional event, while the following placed second in the snatch: Knapp, Brossette, Chitty, Mitchell and Harrington.
