KHHS softball, UCHS baseball teams win district titles

The Keystone Heights High School softball and Union County High School baseball teams had big nights, each winning their respective district championship games by a 12-2 score.

Abbie Roach hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run third inning in the Indians’ win over Santa Fe in the District 3-3A finale. Kinley Carlton, who hit a solo home run, and Kiley Channell each had two RBI, while pitcher Madi Mitzel gave up five hits.

The Tigers had an eight-run fourth inning that included a three-run triple by Jay Cohen and a two-run double by Trevor Holtzendorf in the win over Hilliard in the District 6-1A title game. Cohen and Ayden Elixson each had three RBI, while Holtzendorf and Tre’von Lee each had two. Pitcher Ethan Moody gave up four hits and struck out seven.

In the District 5-1A softball championship game, Union County fell behind 4-0 and never led, losing 7-4 to Madison County.

Leah Clark had two RBI for the Tigers.

The Keystone softball and Union baseball teams earned automatic regional playoff berths with their wins. The Union softball team now waits to see if it earns one of its region’s two at-large berths.
