KHHS wrestlers advance to girls regional finals

Keystone Heights High School’s Saige Dennis and Stamatia Papainannou earned Region 1-1A berths after their performances at the District 3 girls wrestling finals on Feb. 9 at Matanzas High School.

The top four in each weight class earned the right to advance to regional competition, which will be held at North Bay Haven Charter Academy at Panama City.

Dennis placed third in the 145-pound class, which, including her, consisted of five participants. She was pinned in 20 seconds by Ponte Vedra’s Mira Schmidt in her first match, but then recorded two straight pins, defeating Clay’s Jaysie Garcia in 1:41 and Matanzas’ Samayra Cabrera in 1:35.

Papainannou was one of five participants in the 140 class. She began her day by getting pinned in 49 seconds by Ponte Vedra’s Olivia Richie. Papainannou bounced back, pinning Clay’s Alexis Buck in 3:52 to reach the third-place match. She placed fourth after getting pinned in 2:47 by Matanzas’ Saiomy Cabrera.
