Emma Jeffers, 21, of Lake Butler was the first woman across the line, finishing fourth overall in 21:54 in the Stars & Strides 5K. Jeffers, who ran track at Union County High School before the school fielded a cross-country team, competes in cross country at Florida Gateway, where she said a track program started last year.
Meghan Bishop, 45, of Lake Butler was the second woman to finish, placing fifth overall in 22:05. Bishop, a frequent competitor in area road races, said she took up running in college simply to get out and exercise.
