Lawtey plans special election

The city of Lawtey will be holding a special election to fill the seat for City Council, Group 2. Amy Blom held the seat until her resignation, effective Dec. 31, 2025, which she read during the January council meeting, Blom served the city for three years and was set to finish her four-year term in January 2027. 

Blom stated in her letter, “The decision did not come easily and comes with a heavy heart. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the council and represent my community for the last three years.” Blom went on to thank her constituents for their support.   

In an interview, Blom stated that personal reasons and needing time to focus on her health and family led her to the difficult decision. She said she is proud of some of the things she was able to work on while a council member. Blom oversaw tasks related to the streets and sanitation department in Lawtey. During her tenure she helped get new street signs approved, lawn equipment purchased and she worked on the city’s new MOU with the county, helping to secure the fire department in Lawtey. 

The vacant seat will need to be filled. Qualifying week for candidates will begin at noon on Feb. 16 and end at noon on Feb. 20. Candidates must submit a fee of $108.96 and have lived within Lawtey’s city limits for at least six months. 

Voting for the seat will be April 7 at Lawtey City Hall from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. The winner of the seat will only serve the remainder of the current term, which ends January 2027. The winning candidate will be sworn in this May. Voters may vote by mail in this special election, but there will be no early voting. Voter registration ends March 9.
