STARKE—A Fernandina Beach man on probation for driving with a suspended license in Lawtey was sentenced to a year in jail after he was caught for the same offense in Nassau County twice.

Jonathan Eugene Cain, 52, was initially arrested on March 3, 2022, after a Lawtey police officer clocked him at 59 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Officer Robert T. Jordan wrote in the report that during the traffic stop, dispatch notified him that the defendant’s license was suspended and had been suspended 16 times previously.

In April 2022, Cain pleaded to the charge of driving with a suspended license and was sentenced to 36 days in jail and two years’ probation.

One year later, a Nassau County deputy stopped Cain for a non-operating tag light and arrested the defendant after discovering his license status. Judge James M. Colaw sentenced Cain to 60 days in jail for the probation violation and reinstated the defendant’s supervision.

In September 2023, another Nassau deputy stopped Cain for running a stop sign and took the defendant into custody after dispatch told him the 52-year-old’s license was suspended.

On January 3, 2024, Colaw sent the defendant to the Department of Corrections for a year and a day.
