GREEN COVE SPRINGS— Robert Abel, 55, was arrested Sunday in the parking lot of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office after phoning threats to the sheriff and driving to the agency’s headquarters armed and with additional weapons in his vehicle.
The defendant told deputies that he was working for the President of the United States and had come to the facility to arrest Sheriff Michelle Cook.
Cook said the incident is reflective of a trend in the country.
“What we’re seeing across America these days are random ambush attacks on law enforcement,” she said, “and that very well could have been the case Sunday morning or any morning for that matter.”
