Starke native DeWayne McBride set two UAB school records in the Blazers’ 37-27 win over Louisiana Tech on Nov. 26.
The senior set the record for most rushing yards in a game with 272 on 16 carries. That put him ahead of Jordan Howard, who rushed for 262 in a game in 2014.
McBride now has 1,713 rushing yards this season, which is another record. Howard held the previous record with 1,587 yards in 2014.
The 1,713 total rushing yards this season also puts McBride in first in the NCAA ahead of Illinois’ Chase Brown, who has 1,643 yards. McBride also leads the NCAA in rushing yards per game at 155.7. Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim is second at 144.9.
McBride had one touchdown in the win over Louisiana Tech, giving him 19 for the year. That puts him and Ibrahim in a tie for second in the NCAA. Pittsburgh’s Israel Abanikanda leads the nation with 20.
The nation’s leaders in rushing yards per attempt are Michigan’s Donovan Edwards (7.47), East Carolina’s Keaton Mitchell (7.40) and McBride (7.35).
UAB’s regular season is finished. The Blazers will play Miami (Ohio) in the Friday, Dec. 16, HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl. The game will kick off at 11 a.m. on ESPN.
