It was a bittersweet day filled with solemn reflection as the community united to honor the courageous lives lost in combat in Keystone Heights, reminding us all of the profound sacrifices made for our freedom.
On Monday, May 26, the City of Keystone Heights, AMVETS Post 86, and American Legion Post 202 produced the city’s annual Memorial Day service at the Keystone Veterans Memorial Pathway, within the Keystone Heights cemetery.
The ceremony opened with the Keystone Heights JROTC honor guard presenting the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the American Heritage Girls. Pam Saxon sang the National Anthem.
Keystone Heights Mayor Nina Rodenroth commenced the event with compelling opening remarks, setting the stage for the impactful insights shared by speaker Col. James Booth.

“We gather with family and friends to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our great country. Let us embrace the opportunity to begin this Memorial Day with unity, joy, and celebration,” said Mayor Rodenroth.
“Let’s just think of what this flag behind me today represents,” added Booth. “The flag of our nation, the fabric of our nation. That protection of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
At the event’s conclusion, Brittany Mask presented a Congressional Record insert on behalf of Congressman Aaron Bean. This was followed by closing remarks from Commander Mark Alexander of AMVETS Post 86.
The program included a special musical performance by Pat Tenney of the First Coast Highlanders, a TAPS tribute by Roger Smith, and a closing prayer led by James Taylor, Pastor of the Keystone Heights Methodist Church.
