Jeremy Miller’s two-out single gave the Union County High School baseball team a walkoff 4-3 win over visiting Lafayette on March 2.
After a three-run first inning, the Tigers (3-1) were held to two hits by Lafayette pitchers Hyatt Richardson and Garrett Taylor until the seventh. Taylor struck out the inning’s first batter and forced the second to ground out, but Bryson Huggins then stepped to the plate and hit an infield single. Huggins stole second before Miller drilled a 2-0 pitch into left field.
That capped a 2-for-4 night for Miller.
The Tigers scored the game’s first three runs off just two hits in the first inning. Ayden Elixson was able to reach on a dropped third strike, while Tra’von Lee hit a single. An error on a pickoff attempt at second allowed Elixson and Lee to advance to third and second before Tucker Hardee drew a walk. With two outs, Preston Bonsall hit a triple into center field.
Lafayette (3-1) cut into the lead in the top of the third, which began with Dawson Mock hitting a triple and then scoring on Hunter Vann’s single. An error on a pickoff attempt Kevin Posada, who entered to run for Vann, advance to third. Posada scored on a Taylor fly ball to make the score 3-2.
Union had a runner in scoring position in the fourth. Ethan Moody hit a one-out single. Jeff Cook, who entered to run for Moody, advanced to second on a wild pitch, but two straight batters were put out on fly balls.
The Hornets tied the score in the sixth. Karlos Murphy hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a Richardson bunt. One out later, Richardson scored on an Austin Herron triple.
Lafayette put one on with one out in the seventh, but Elixson, who entered the game to relieve starting pitcher Moody, forced both batters he faced to fly out.
Union will next travel to play Gainesville on Tuesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. It’ll be a rematch of a game played on Feb. 23, which the Tigers won 13-6.
