STARKE — Starke commissioners said goodbye to Wilbur Waters, who has retired from public office after 30 years.

Waters has served on both the city and county commissions during that time. He served Starke District 5 continuously since being reelected in 2006.

Waters thanked the people for allowing him to serve, and he thanked his family for understanding when that responsibility infringed upon his time with them.

Judge Tatum Davis also presided over the swearing in of District 5’s new commissioner, Andy Redding, who took the oath of office alongside returning commissioners Danny Nugent and Shannon Smith.

Davis told them their decisions will have the most impact the lives of local residents.

“We’re all depending on you to make wise and informed and educated decisions,” Davis said, impressing upon them the importance of maintaining civility, even when tempers flare.

The commission also elected a new mayor, appointing Commissioner Scott Roberts, his first time filling the chair since being elected last year. Smith was appointed vice mayor.
