STARKE — Starke Commissioner Wilbur Waters has announced his retirement from office at the end of this term.
Waters is a former city and county commissioner who was reelected to the city commission in 2006. He has served Starke District 5 consecutively since that time. Waters said he has enjoyed his time in office, but coming up on 30 years, he feels it is time to step away.
Former commissioner Randy Crews has already quailed to run for the seat. With qualifying set to close at noon on Friday, there is still time to enter this or any of the city and county races — but not much.
As of press time, no one had filed to run in Starke District 3. District 1 incumbent Danny Nugent did have competition, however. Michael Heeder has filed to run.
The county commission race for District 2 now has three qualified candidates. Incumbent Kenny Thompson will face two other Republicans, former Starke commissioner Larry Davis and contractor Mark Williams.
District 5 incumbent Danny Riddick has three challengers, Tom Germano, Christiann Hudson and Trish Tucker. All are running as Republicans. Another candidate, Michael Monaghan, withdrew from the race.
Bradford School Board incumbents from Districts 1 and 2, Sheila Cummings and Gayle Nicula remain unchallenged. The incumbent from District 5, Erica Reddish, is facing a race against Lynn Melvin.
