Pink was the color of the night at Northside Christian Academy on Oct. 7, but the five-team Dig Pink Volleyball Classic, which consisted of the host Eagles, Hope Christian Academy and Cedar Key, Hamilton County and Hawthorne high schools, was about more than just raising awareness for breast cancer. Thanks to donations by participating teams as well as money collected from admissions and concessions, a check for $1,000 was presented to Mike Hinman, a school employee who’s been battling stage-4 cancer. Hinman was surprised money was being collected on his behalf. “He had no idea,” NCA Athletic Director/Head Volleyball Coach Todd von Weyhe said. “He cried.” Hinman (fifth from the right) is pictured with his wife, Connie. Von Weyhe is pictured at the far left. Captains from each team (besides Hawthorne) are also pictured, including NCA’s Chylee Kahakua (fourth from left) and Finley Poyner (fifth from left) and Hope Christian’s Jadie Clark (second from right) and Haley Sheppard (far right). NCA went 2-2 during tournament play and had two players named to the all-tournament team: Poyner and Karissa Lawrence.
