The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office said an apparent gun sighting at Lawtey Elementary School disrupted a class and resulted in a student being referred for a misdemeanor charge.
In a social media post, the office said that on Tuesday, Sept. 27, a student reported to a staff member that another child brought a gun to school.
“This information was immediately reported to law enforcement, and the situation was quickly secured,” the office said. “The gun was later found to be a plastic gun; however, all such incidents are treated as a real threat.”
Col. Brad Smith of the sheriff’s office said that although the incident did not cause a school lockdown, the student’s action caused a disruption in a classroom, which necessitated the misdemeanor charge referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
