The Starke Rotary Club’s Super Bowl pool winner said he read a book during the big game, only glancing up occasionally at his television to check the score.
John Smith donated his $1,000 winnings to the Rotary Foundation in the name of Starke Rotary Club members.
“Everybody in the club put money into this thing,” he told his colleagues after posing with a ceremonial check and President-elect Brad Bishop. “I think we can make it work out for like $50 per member. Every member will have $50 credited to their account.”
Local Rotary Club members typically donate to the international foundation, which funds projects around the world. Some of the money is cycled back to local clubs for projects.
Last year, the Rotary Foundation sent $26 million back to clubs for 473 local projects and funded 1,092 global projects for $55 million. The foundation also spent $15 million on 324 disaster response grants.
Other winners in the pool receiving $25 gift cards to local restaurants were Jody Carroll, Mike Schlofman, and Paula Register.
