Reckless biker tased after fleeing and hiding
Jeffery Carl Goodman, 37, of Starke, was arrested by Union Deputies on October 28 for an out-of-county warrant, resisting an officer, and fleeing and eluding.
According to an arrest report, the incident began around 10:17 p.m. when Deputy S. Word responded to complaints of a yellow Suzuki dirt bike being ridden recklessly along Southwest 44th Trail, in Worthington Springs’s Palm RV Park.
The complainant told dispatch the rider had been speeding up and down the road for hours, using only a flashlight as a headlight.
Upon arrival, Deputy Word spotted the matching bike and activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. Instead of complying, the rider, later identified as the defendant, accelerated, nearly striking the complainant on Southwest 45th Terrace. Goodman then fled for about three-tenths of a mile before wrecking the unregistered bike and bolting on foot into nearby woods.
Union Sheriff’s Corporal Clyde Berringer wrote in the arrest report that Department of Corrections tracking dogs located the defendant about 100 yards into the woods, hiding under brush.
“Lawful orders were given to Jeffery to show his hands and to come out,” wrote the corporal. “Jeffery continued to lay on the ground. I ordered Jeffery several times to follow orders, he refused.”
Berringer wrote that after warning the 37-year-old that he would use his taser if the defendant did not come out, “he continued to
refuse all lawful orders.”
“I deployed my agency-issued X-26 Taser with both probes, striking Jeffery in the upper torso area,” reported Barringer. “This had the desired effect to gain compliance from Jeffery.”
