Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner told a Union County candidate forum that his first act as governor would be calling a special session on affordability, faulting the Legislature for two years of inaction.
Renner, completing a 67-county tour, proposed eliminating homestead property taxes for permanent residents, offset by $10 billion to $20 billion in spending cuts and replacement taxes shifted onto tourists and newcomers. He also pledged to cut insurance rates by up to 20 percent and called for a statewide ban on hyperscale data centers, warning they would strain the grid and aquifer.
