Restaurants making moves

STARKE — Starke restaurants are planning moves, one of which will solve one of the city’s biggest code enforcement problems.

Police Chief Jeff Johnson updated the city commission on the plans during its recent meeting.

According to the chief, the Subway restaurant on South Temple Avenue next to Sonny’s BBQ is jumping across the highway to the former Checker’s location.

Doing so will allow Subway to open a drive-thru window, which will help it to serve the public’s preference for curbside service.

It will also clean up one of the most blighted corners in the city. After Checker’s left Starke, the location was briefly occupied by a drive-thru Asian restaurant. Since then, the property has been an eyesore.

Pizza Hut is also planning a move, eliminating eat-in dining to focus on takeout and delivery, according to Johnson. From its location on North Temple Avenue next to the courthouse annex, Pizza Hut is moving into the Deerfoot Village Shopping Center in a storefront some may remember as Larry’s Giant Subs.

This is the second new tenant coming soon to the shopping center. An Aldi grocery store is planned for the former Save-a-Lot space.
