LAKE BUTLER — On May 13, 2022, for the second year the Lake Butler Rotary Club’s UCHS Interact Club placed crosses along both sides of S.R. 121, from the intersection with S.R. 121 and S.R. 231 to well past Lake Butler Middle School.

The crosses, well over 100 in number, each carrying the name of a veteran, a flag and, if the veteran is deceased, a black stripe.  The crosses were spaced 32 feet apart.

The display is called “Remembering Our Heroes.”  The crosses are all make in the UCHS woodshop and put out twice a year, for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.  Most of the crosses bear the name of local veterans but anyone may purchase a cross and have a veteran honored regardless of where they are from.  Currently there are a number of veterans from all over the country represented in the display.  Applications for having a cross placed for a veteran are available at the Union County Elections Office and are good for two years.  At the end of that time there is an option to renew or retire the memorial.

The crosses were displayed until Memorial Day and then removed until being placed again a few weeks before Veteran’s Day in November.

UCHS woodshop students, Interact Clun members and volunteers work together to get the crosses put together and prepared for the event.
Lake Butler Rotary Clun member and UCHS Interact Club sponsor Nancy Griffis spearheaded the flag placements and was out their working alongside the volunteers and club members.
