Bradford County Fire Rescue Chief Ben Carter said Gary Wise has always supported doing what is best for the community as a whole, and that’s why he wanted to recognized Wise’s retirement as Starke Fire Chief in front of the county commission Monday.

“Today we have the honor of paying tribute to a true public servant who’s dedicated an impressive 29 years of service to our community. It is an honor to recognize the retirement of Starke Fire Rescue Chief Gary Wise, an accomplished professional who has made an indelible mark on not only the city of Starke but Bradford County as a whole,” Carter said.

“Chief Wise’s career has been a testament to unwavering commitment and steadfast leadership. With close to three decades of service, he has stood strong in the face of countless emergencies, from battling formidable fires, leading his crews through intricate vehicle extrications, to even the occasional cat in a tree, and his ability to maintain composure and decisiveness in the most challenging set of circumstances has been an inspiration to many of his colleagues, myself included, and reassured those in distress.”

“Throughout his career, Chief Wise has been a source of wisdom and guidance for city and county firefighters alike. His leadership has instilled a culture of excellence, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and professionalism. Under his stewardship, Starke Fire Rescue has continually demonstrated its dedication to public safety.”

Carter continued, recognizing Wise’s family for supporting him and Wise’s valuable mentorship and friendship.

“Chief  Wise, your service to our community has been invaluable, and your legacy as a dedicated public servant and leader is secure. On behalf of the entire county and the fire rescue community, I extend our sincere appreciation for your contributions over the past 29 years. We wish you a retirement filled with contentment, new adventures and well deserved relaxation,” Carter said.

From Lawtey to Theressa, from the country club to Brooker, Wise said there probably isn’t a road in Bradford he hasn’t traveled in an emergency vehicle over the past 29 years. He was grateful for the honor, saying he isn’t going anywhere and will remain available. Both county and city responders are in good hands, he said.
