STARKE— The State Attorney’s Office dropped three worthless check cases against a Starke man.
Joseph Stefan Wheeler, 53 was charged for the Jan. 5 offense of issuing a $5,000 bad check to a Starke building supply business. He was also charged for issuing three worthless checks to a Starke convenience store in January totaling $868.41 and an additional check to the same store on Feb. 17 for $250.
Two felonies remain unadjudicated for Wheeler. Both stem from claims by a Bradford County woman that Wheeler agreed in August 2020 to construct a barn on the woman’s property, including electrical and plumbing for $48,000.
The victim told a state investigator that she paid Wheeler $28,500 in addition to directly paying a concrete company $5,068 for the project.
The woman added that Wheeler failed to complete the project, and a Department of Business and Professional Regulation investigator determined he was not licensed to perform the contracting services.
